Diarrhea is an unpleasant health condition in which one experiences liquid or loose bowels frequently. A change in diet or any infection in the body can cause diarrhea. It may be short in duration and sudden in onset. Sometimes it occurs off and on and sometimes it lasts for few weeks only. Like human beings, dogs may also suffer from diarrhea. If your dog suffers from it few days a month then it is not a matter of concern. If diarrhea persists for more than 24 hours then it may cause dehydration in your dog. Now a very important thing to ponder about is: What to do If My Dog has Diarrhea?
What to do If My Dog has Diarrhea?
The first thing you should do is to stop giving food to your dog for 24 hours or less while your dog is suffering from diarrhea. Do not stop providing water to your dog. Instead, give your dog plenty of clean and fresh water to protect your dog from dehydration. If the diarrhea does not occur again then you can bring your dog back to his routine diet. But if it persists then you can offer him a bland diet e.g. small amount of rice or boiled hamburger. Rice improves digestion that’s why it is recommended in diarrhea.
Sometimes it is better to make some changes in the routine diet of dog because the routine diet may be the reason of causing diarrhea. Fiber should be added in the diet, fat intake should be reduced from the diet of your dog and only those ingredients should be included which are easily digestible for dogs. Bananas can also help in reducing diarrhea but it should be offered in small quantity.
Sometimes diarrhea persists due to the presence of intestinal worms. In that case, appropriate wormers should be selected because wormers kill the intestinal worms. You can repeat the wormer more than once or even for months. Worm eggs should be removed from the environment because the fecel flotation test eyes on worm eggs. The fecel flotation test can be negative if there is no production of eggs. So even if the result is negative, a wormer should still be prescribed.
Subcutaneous fluids should be given to your dog to prevent dehydration. Oral fluids should be avoided as mostly they are not properly absorbed by the dog if he is suffering from diarrhea. Antibiotics can also be given if the condition worsens.
What food to feed if my Dog has Diarrhea?
If your dog looks active and happy while having diarrhea then a proper diet plan should be adopted. Cooked bland food is good for your dog in this condition. Use the ratio of 1/3 chicken and 2/3 rice. Cook chicken (with low fats). Add cottage cheese in it. Oil should not be added as it contains fat. You can also add 1 to 3 table-spoons of yogurt. Sweet potato is also good for dogs with diarrhea. Feed this diet for 2 or 3 days after your dog gets recovered diarrhea. If diarrhea continues to happen then take your dog to a vet.
