What is a gestation period?
A gestation period is also known as a pregnancy period. The gestation period varies from humans to animals and also from animals to animals. The average length of gestation of a human is around 40 weeks, but it can also last till 38 weeks. It can be described as the total number of days, months or weeks, a baby spends in the uterus after it has been attached to the uterus wall.
The gestation period for cats
As mentioned above, the gestation period also varies from animals to animals. Therefore, every other animal will have a different gestation period from each other. A human has a gestation period of nine months, whereas, a cat has a gestation period of only two and a half month. If calculated in the number of days, then a domestic cat will have a gestation period of only 64 to 67 days, which makes it even less than two and a half month. The raccoons, which are often mistaken as the cats, also have almost the same gestation period like of the cats, which is 63 days. Whereas, a wolf has exactly the same gestation period, which a cat has.
According to Emergency vet, animals which have a short gestation period like the domestic cats are the domestic dogs with 61 days of the gestation period, European mink with 57 days, a red fox with 52 days and otter with 73 days. The guinea pig has the gestation period, which is closest to the gestation period for cats and it is of 65 days only.
The gestation period stages for cats
The gestation period stages for cats pass down really quickly because they have a gestation period of only 64 to 67 days. During the first two weeks of the gestation period, it becomes very difficult, almost impossible to tell that whether a cat is pregnant or not. After the first two weeks, the fetal can be easily seen through an ultrasound and by the end of the fourth week, a fetal’s heartbeat can also be detected quite easily. Then, between the fourth and fifth week of gestation, a cat will probably start feeling morning sickness, and the nipples start to swell and turn pink.
After the completion of half of the stage of the gestation period, the cat’s belly is swollen enough that it becomes very visible and the domestic cats start asking for more affection from their owner. They are very unlikely to interact with the other animals during the last few stages of the gestation. Also, between the 42 to 49 days, the pregnant cats start becoming more restless, and due to the pressure on the bladder, some soiling accidents may occur. By the end of the 56th day, the pregnant cats become even more restless and finally start looking for a birth place, by roaming around the whole house. They may even start howling due to the discomfort, which they are going through. After the completion of sixty days, the contractions begin, and the cat is now ready to give birth anytime, in between the 60th to the 70th day of the gestation.
